Almost two y e a r 8 ago American physicians, through the American Medical Association, announced a new universal symbol which tells anyone rendering emergency care to a personwhois unconscious or otherwise unable to communicate that its wearer has a special physical condition requiring special attention. In the intervening two years the symbol has gained worldwide acceptance. It hai been widely disseminated throughout the United States and, through the World Medical Association, is now being utilized in many other nations. The symbol may be displayed on a wristlet, an anklet, a medallion around the neck or elsewhere. It is a sign that there are vital medical facts on a personal health information card in the bearer’s purse or wallet or on an alerting device. The symbol is a hexagonshaped emblem containing a six-pointed figure, or sign of life. Superimposed on the figure is . a staff with a snake entwined about it--the staff of Aesculapius, the insignia of the medical profession.
