The blood-sucking hookworm, which enters the body through the skin, is encountered most frequently in the coastal plains of the Southeastern States and adjacent mountains. The whipworm, which looks like its name, is most prevalent in the Appalachian Mountains and the lowlands of south and central Louisiana. Tapeworms are common in children in parts of the South. Although intestinal worm in fections are frequently mild and may even pass unnoticed, the more severe infections can be serious and even fatal. Children are more susceptible because of their greater exposure to infection and lack of immunity or tolerance to many of the parasites. Careful attention to personal hygiene, good eating habits and proper sanita tion are important for prevention. Handwashing after toilet and before meals is essential.
