Reed, area manager for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia, has announced the elimination of long distance telephone charges between Cut peper and the exchanges of Criglersville, Madison, and Sperryville. Long distance charges between Madison and Orange will be eliminated at this time also. The new service will extend to approximately 43,000 people in these exchanges with 12,000 phones and will be effective on July 1 1965. Reed pointed out that in recent years calls between these exchanges had increased to the point that C& P felt toll charges were no longer appropriate and had become burdensome to a majority of the telephone users in these areas. In view of the added number of telephones subscribers will be able to call without a long distance charge, monthly rates in Criglersville, Madison and Sperryville, will increase on residence service from 25(! to 75C and on business service from50C to $2.25
According to Mr. Reed, C&P has been preparing for this extended area service for 12 months. Total expenditures in this connection have been approximately $350,000.
