Miss Millie Dodson of Washington was among the fifteen finalists in the state beauty pageant held last week in Richmond to select Miss Universe of Virginia. The state pageant was held at the Mosque in Richmond Monday through Thursday with about fifty young women competing. Candidates were judged on poise and -heauty and were required to make a one minute talk on the county in which they live. In addition to being judged in a bathing suit and evening gown, they had to appear in a costume indicative of their county. Millie chose a dress appliqued with apples representative of Rappahannock's fruit industry. The pageant was held Wednesday evening, then the finalists were judged Thursday evening and the winner selected. Miss Beverly Johnson of Alexandria was the title winner.
Millie had been chosen Miss Rappahannock in local competition the first of April in a contest sponsored by the Rappahannock Jaycees Chapter. The state contest was also sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Millie was accompanied to Richmond by Mrs. Audrey Shubert of Culpeper and they stayed at the Shearton Motor Inn. Attending the pageant Thursday night were Mrs. Ollie Dodson and Miss Shelia Dodson, mother and sister of the Rappahannock contestant.
