Brown is something of a champion in his own right. At the age of 22, he was working at the DuPont plant in Waynesboro, supporting a wife and two children, when Ferrum basketball coach, Jim Hartbarger convinced him of the merits of a college education. Ferrum, with its modest tuition, student work program, and policy of keeping the door of opportunity open to those students who want an education provided him the means of realizing this goal.
