Greenspan Program

A new phase of the Cropland Adjustment Program (CAP) offers assistance to agencies of the Federal, State, and local governments, who wish to acquire farm land for parks and recreational areas. Already interest has been shown in the program which was first announced in February. The program is called Green span - so named because of its potential to make green space available to urban dwellers. Greenspan offers these public entities grants to increase the retirement of cropland to certain non-crop uses. These include the preservation of open spaces and natural beauty, the development of wildlife habitat and recreational facilities, and the prevention of air and water pollution.
Grants are made to these government agencies both for the acquisition of the land and for carrying out approved soil and water conservation practices. Grants may not exceed 50 per cent of the cost of the land, nor may they exceed the funds that could have been paid to a fanner under CAP. The Greenspan program of CAP is administered locally by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS).
