Reunion on Sunday
The annual reunion of descendants of Germanna colonists will be held Sunday, July 17, at Siegen Forest on Rt. 3, between Culpeper and Fredericksburg, Registration will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with picnic lunch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Featured address at 11:30 a.m. will be “German-American Folklore,” by Dr. Rimer L. Smith, of Madison College faculty, Harrisonburg. Dr. Smith has written several books on the subject and is currently engaged in research for an additional publication. Reunions of descendants of the first Germanna settlers are held annually on the third Sunday in July. The first colony was established in 1714 under the patronage of Governor Alexander Spotswood in a horsehose bend of the Rapidan River. It was then the northwest frontier of Virginia' settlements. The site is now! in the northeast corner of Orange County. Other colonJ les were located in the vicinity in 1717 and 1719. By standards of their time, they were educated people, bringing their own Protestant mini ster and their own schoolmas ter for children of the settlement.
