At Germanna in 1716 Spotswood’s company was outfitted for the celebrated expedition over the Blue Ridge, commemorated in the gem-studded golden horseshoes that he presented to his associates. From 1721 to 1731 Germanna was the county seat of the new county of Spotsylvania. Within the same period and for some years longer it was the residence of ex-Governor Spotswood in his “Enchanted Castle.” Here Colonel William Byrd visited him in 1732 and from here traveled with his host the 13 miles by coach to inspect the iron mines. In 1726 the second colony (1717) began moving up the Robinson River to Madison County and there built Hebron Lutheran Church. In 1956, descendants of the colonists formed the Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies and obtained a charter. They purchased 270
