There is also the possibility of severe reaction to the horse serum base of the tetanus antitoxin that must be given in cases in which there has been no previous treatment, or no record exists of prior lmmu nization. Usually, the first nerves affected by tetanus are those of the head and neck which control the chewing muscles and cause the condition that is the disease's second name— lockjaw. Deaths from tetanus, the State Health Department advises, are preventable through immunization with tetanus toxoid. Such protection provides long-term immunity. There is rarely any reaction to this vaccine--unlike tetanus antitoxin, the treatment that often must be given to a person as an emergency measure, Reactions to the antitoxin’s horse serum base occur in about one case in 10. The reactions include allergies, hives and serum sickness.
