Two Scouts on
Philmont Expedition
Two Rappahannock boys, Scouts of Troop #64, left July 6 for Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, N. M. They are Danny Hitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hitt of Amissville and Stewart Hawkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hawkins, Washington. For the trip, the boys joined about 30 other Scouts from the Shenandoah Area Council of which Rappahannock is a part. Accompany* ing the group were Leon Waters, troop leader of Luray and Robert Inskeep, assistant lead er, also of Luray and John Lumpkin, a professional scout er, of Luray and John Lumpkin a professional scouter, also of Luray. The group left from Winchester on the five-day trip by bus which took them to their destination. After their arrival at Philmont, they began a 12-day experience which includes hiking and camping along the rugged mountain trails where heights exceed 12,000 feer in places, other activities emphasize mountain climbing, fishing, conservation, moskeet, gold-panning archaeology, horseback riding and training in various scouting skills. On the return trip, the group will visit and sight see points of interest which include^ Pike’s Peak, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, Lake Michigan and the McCormick factory. They will arrive back in Winchester July 26.
