Wheat Export Set
For 750 Million Bu.
Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman today announced U. S. export targets of 750 million bushels wheat from both 1967 and 1968 crops
“These are minimum export targets," Secretary said. “They will not be reached automatically or easily, but we intend to reach them. Current conditions and trends indicate we can do so if business and government work at it together.”
| Although total world trade in wheat has dropped off about 17 per cent this year, com[pared
with 1965-66, U. S. is setting new record in commercial wheat exports. Comme,'rcial export total, including short-term credit and barter, for this marketing year expected tc be 430 million bushels, compared with 336 million in 1965-66. Concessional sales and dona tions have been smaller this marketing year than in recent years. Decline due to increased aid from other countries in maintaining needed level of shipments to India, dropoff of U. S. food aid to F.gypt, lAlgeria, and Yugoslavia, and 'program shift from sales for (foreign currencies to sales for dollars on long-term credit terms in accordance with policy of food for freedom legislation enacted Jn 1966. Also, under terms of new jlegislation, greater emphasis being placed on use of U. S. food aid to meet self-help objectives in recipient countries U. S. wheat exports expected to total 735-740 million bushels this marketing year although in recent months export volume has dropped from record volume of first half of marketing year. Total in 196566 was record 867 million bushels. I- xports under P. L. 480 estimated at 310 million bushels this marketing year, compared with 531 million in 1965-66. Secretary called attention to fact that total exports for marketing year just ending, and carry-over June 30 this year , are very close to targets set year ago when 1967 wheat acreage allotment was established. 1 xpected total exports
