That was the sentiment oi the writer James Bland many years ago, when he wrote that favorite for male quartets. But today, should you become ill enough mentally to enter a mental hospital, you’d be better off in an institution in almost any other state.
In just about every way you look at a state’s mental health and hospital programs, Virginia ranks near the bottom. A few states--very few--rank lower. That’s why, concerned citizens of central Virginia, are undertaking personally as responsible people, to come together to develop a unified plan to establish a Central Mental Health Facility for this region. Rappahannock County is one of the nine counties in this Region, referred to as Mental Health 9. On Monday evening a delegation of interested citizens attended a regional meeting of Central Virginians for M&ntal Health called by Dr. Richard W. Garnett, coordinator for the Charlottesville - Albemarle area, at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville. The group heard Mr. Wharton of the State Department of Mental Hygiene and Hospitals and representatives from the Region III Office of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare speak on the planning which would be necessary to establish a Mental Health Center to serve this area of the state, which includes the counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Greene, Madison, Nelson, Fluvanna, Orange, Culpeper, and Rappahannock. The H.E. W. officials and Mr. Wharton pledged their continuing help
