Hog Cholera Cases

Four outbreaks of hog cholera have been reported this month in Virginia, according to Dr. W. L. Bendix, State Veterinarian. All cases suggested the cholera was manmade.
The cases in Prince George, Northumberland, V irginia Beach, and Rockingham have i been traced to the use of porcine origin Modified Live Vaccine (MLV). Dr. Bendix pointed out that all Modified Live Vaccine was intended to be administered with anti-hog cholera serum, but in some cases this is not being done. When serum is not used with these MLV type vaccines, trouble can be expected Vaccine is under continuing evaluation as to its potency and safety. Last year it was found that the porcine origin vaccine was not safe. The license to produce this vaccine was withdrawn about the first of the year. Apparently a considerable stock of the porcine vaccine is still on hand and getting all of it out of trade channels is next to impossible. For the protection of swine, Dr. Bendix strongly stresses the importance of the following:
(1) Do not allow use of porcine origin vaccine in y o u r swine. Be sure that the vaccine is not of porcine origin.
(2) Never use any modified live vaccine without usinganti -hog cholera serum simultaneously.
