Precautions Urged
A plea for Virginia farm families to observe safety precautions came today from G. D. Kite, extension agricultural engineer at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg. As chairman of the extension safety committee, Kite pointed out that July 23-29 will be National Farm Safety Week this year. “Think and Act Safely" is the theme. In 1965, he says, 18 accidental deaths occurred on Virginia farms. A total of 2,476 accidental deaths was recorded in the Old Dominion in that year. Of the total deaths, 1,074 involved motor vehicles; 617 occurred in homes; and 167 happened at work. During the same year, in the entire nation 107,000 accidental deaths occurred. About 2,200 of these happened on farms. Tractor mishaps claimed the lives of about 1,000 persons in the United States that year.
