Bill Isakson, Economic Insect Detection Service VPI, checked the Castleton area on June 21st for extent of grasshopper infestation. He found that numphs (young wingless grasshoppers) are beginning to emerge and in reporting on his inspections advised prop erty owners to be on the alert about their premises, corn fields, etc. to determine the need for using insecticides. Materials recommended are: 80% Carbaryle (Sevin) @ 1.4 lbs. per acre one day prior to harvest for vegetables (or 2-3 pounds of 25% Malathion per acre.) Follow directions of the manufacturer.

*** Elm leaf beetle are present ly abundance on all species of elms. Recommendations: 2 teaspoons of a 25% DDT emulsion concentrate, or 2/4 teaspoonful of a 50% DDT wettable pow der per gallon (1 quart or 1 pound respectively per 100 gallons) will give control.
