Sperryville Fire Department suffered a set back in carnival operations last week when heavy rains Thursday and Friday evenings hindered or curtailed activities. Sudden showers Thursday night dispersed the large crowd which had attended the parade earlier and continuous showers Friday evening prevented the opening of the stands. The parade Thursday evening was well attended and progressed on schedule, but shortly after its conclusion showers dampened the crowd as well as its spirits and festivities closed early. A repeat performance Friday evening kept activity at a minimum and delayed the queen crowning ceremony scheduled for the evening until Saturday night. Parade awards given were best pumper from town over 500, John H. Enders, Berryville; second, Orange; pumper from town under 500, Middletown, second, Brandy Station; best appearing fire department, Flint Hill, second, Spotsylvania; oldest active fireman, New Market; fire company coming longest distance, Spotsylvania; best appearing rescue squad, Orange, second, Chester Gap; best appearing Ladies Auxiliary, Amissville, second Strasburg; best major ette group, Wheaton, Md., sec
