The minimum age for vaccinating heifer calves against brucellosis has been lowered from four to three months, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce an nounces. “It is most important that producers take note of this lowering of the vaccinating age, since it is a departure from previous recommendations,* said Dr. George B. Estes, assistant 6tate veterinarian. “For well over 20 years we have recommended vaccinating between four and eight months of age.* The U. S. Department of Agriculture has approved, and recommends, the lowering of the brucellosis vaccination age from four to three months In so doing, USD A notes that recent research reveals that the resistance induced in heifer calves vaccinated at three months of age with Strain 19 is equivalent to that in heifers vaccinated at an older age. Also, they find calves treated at three months of age are less likely to carry over a suspicious or positive vaccination reaction that can confuse the brucellosis test. Over 100,000 head of cattle are vaccinated yearly in Virginia for brucellosis in an effort to wipe out this costly livestock disease. The vac cine used must be approved by USDA’s animal health division and administered under the supervision of a federal or state veterinary official. At present over threefourths of the counties in Virginia are certified as brucel losis free. Rappahannock is among these counties being free. The goal of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce, cooperating with L'SDA, is to make the entire state brucellosis free by December 31, 1968.
