Rappahannock County registered its first fatal traffic victim of this calendar year early Sunday morning. Samuel Burnam Atkins, 68, of Sperryville died in Culpeper Sunday of injuries sustained an hour and a half earlier on Route 211 in Sperryville. Atkins was walking home from Sperryville carnival grounds when he was struck by a west bound car operated by Marion Clarence Ellison of College Park, Md., according to Trooper J. B. Willis. He was taken to the Culpeper hospital by Rappahannock Rescue Squad, and died a short time later.
Other traffic incidents reported included a hit and run on Route 211 east of the Town of Washington which occurred Saturday night. Jack Lillard of Flint Hill, operating a 1953 Chevrolet, was sideswiped by another vehicle as he proceeded west just off of the dual lane section of the highway. Trooper J. B.
