The Compulsory School Attendance Law was passed unanimously by the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors at the regular August meeting held Friday at which all members were present. Fifteen citizens were present in support of the school law which had not been in effect for the last ten years and was abolished as part of Massive Resistance. Many excellent points were made in favor of the law but the most succint was that a literate population is necessary for proper functioning of a democratic form of government and is mandatory and possible. The motion to adopt the Compulsory School Attendance Law was made by L. H. Luttrell and seconded by Herbert Foster. They had sponsored the ordinance which was advertised for the public hearing. O. A. Norton, School Superintendent answered questions in regard to school matters and reported that the new consolidated elementary school under construction has the structural steel in place on the classroom areas and they expected to start the roof this week. The construction was slightly delayed due to rain but there was every indication that it would be completed by June 1st, 1968 according to schedule. Dr. L. A. Dickerson of the Health Department brought to the attention of the Board the fact that it has been three years since a Dog Vaccination Clinic was held in Rappahannock. He stated ti}£re were 1184 dogs in the c«fBKy in 1964 at the time of the last cBpjc and that now the dog population is 1350. The cost a(ould be $1.00 per dog at the clinic whereas private veterinarian’s fees start at $3.00 for the same service. L. H.
