Updikes Given “Belling”
If the folks in the east end of Sperryville heard a g^eat noise on Saturday night, such as pots and pans, an old washboard pounded by a big stick plus cow bells and the honking of automobile horns, well, this was a “shivaree” or a “belling" in the tradition that has been through the years. This was to honor Mr. and Mrs. Francis Updike who recently married and returned from a honeymoon trip to Nags Head.
