For fattening yearling beef cattle, urea treated corn silage and 2-3 lbs. of ground corn per day with enough S.B.O.M. or C.S.M. to provide 1.3 lbs. of digestible protein at the beginning of the feeding period and 1.9 lbs. at the end has given the most economical gains at the Middleburg station. With such a bountiful corn crop you may want to carry , more yearlings, or hold over calves for the spring sales. Likely only cattlemen who want to do a precise job should do either. For sure you should have high quality corn silage (18% TDN or higher). Urea does not improve the TDN of any silage and is not recommended for any silage other than corn. Use calves in 300-400 pound range grading medium and up. Have clean, dry, shaded barn lot with water available for weaning calves and getting on feed. Keep calves in weaning lot until eating well and thoroughly weaned. Vaccinate for shipping fever and blackleg on arrival. Treat individually any calf showing signs of sickness. After calves start eating, treat for worms and spray or use pour-on meth od for grubs and lice. Graze late fall grass and feed 2 pounds of grain until feeding period starts. Start feeding when fall grazing is insufficient. Feed twice daily all the silage calves will clean up.
