Vietnam Veterans
Veterans returning from ser vice in Vietnam no longer face involuntary assignment to a reserve unit for weekly drill once they are released from active duty, according to the Department of Defense. Instead, they will serve out the remainder of their six-year military obligation in a standby status. They could, however, be assigned to twoweeks annual Summer training, or, they could volunteer for weekly drill. The new policy excludes those Naval Reservists who enlist in the Reserve under an agreement to serve two years on active duty and the balance of their service obligation in the Naval Reserve. Reservists who have not served in Vietnam, but who have two or more years of active duty, will not be “involuntarily* assigned to ready reserve units for regular drill unless vacancies for their specialties could not otherwise be filled. The policy also does not affect the Army National Guard since that component relies entirely upon volunteers to man Its units. Edwin L.
