Ft. Eustis, Va. - Army Chief Warrant Officer Philip L. Thornton in, whose parents live in Sperryville, is a member of a 13-man aviation detachment from Ft. Eustis, that departed October 22 and October 24 on a mission to support six major scientific programs in Ellsworth Land, Antarctica, in the earth’s southernmost continent. Hie major project this year will be the continuation of the integrated research by many different scientists along the coastal areas of West Antarctica. Reconnaissance geology projects will be conducted in the early part of the Antarctic summer (November 1 to mid-February) by Texas Technological CoUege scientists in the Canisteo Peninsula area. University of Wisconsin geologists will make similar studies of the Jones Mountains and Thurston Island in the East Coast area later in the summer.
