The fire drills should be conducted periodically. They should be based on an escape plan that features: 1) a floor plan indicating all doors, windows, stairways, porches and porch roofs, 2) alternate routes for escape from any part of the house or apartment, 3) practice drills both day and night so that every member of the family knows how to leave the premises in a hurry, 4) assignment of someone to help the very young and elderly to leave the premises, and 5) agreement on a meeting place outside the house where all must assemble.
Aside from the drills, the Association makes a pointed reminder:
“Remember! Fire prevention is your best fire protection!”
Home fires, the Association says, claimed some 6,700 lives in the United States in 1967 -- 60 per cent of the victims being the very young and the very old.
