A costumed re-enactment of America’s First Thanksgiving will take place Sunday, November 24, at 1 p.m. at “Berkeley Plantation” in Virginia at the site pf the first official Thanksgiving In this country December 4, 1619. The service will be conducted with all possible authenticity. This event is sponsored annually by the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, Inc., of which E. B. Pendleton, Jr., Richmond, is President. “Berkeley Plantation” is located on Rt. 5, between Williamsburg and Richmond.
The band of 39 Englishmen, whose leader was Capt. John Woodlief, came ashore December 4, 1619, from the Margaret, a 47-ton, two-masted ship which set sail from Bristol, England, two and a half months earlier. They had come to these shores to claim for the proprietors of the Berkeley company the 8,000-acre tract of land, designated as “Berkeley Hundred,” granted to them by King James I.
The Thanksgiving celebration of December 4, 1619, was observed in compliance with the proprietors’ instructions in the charter given Captain Woodlief that “the day of our ship’s arrival . . shall be yearly and perpetually kept as a day of Thanksgiving.”
In 1956 descendants of Captain Woodlief erected at Berkeley a brick monument, bearing a tablet.
Because the new amphitheatre now under construction at “Berkeley” will not be completed by November 24, only about 900 persons can be accommodated in the limited quarters available for the celebration.
