Combats Smoking
An Inter-Agency Council on Smoking has been formed by representatives of the American Cancer Society, Virginia Division; Virginia Heart Association; local Parent-Teacher Association Councils and the TB and Health Association of Northern Virginia. The steering committee has a pilot program underway at Frederick Junior High School and plans to offer a similiar program to elementary principals and teachers in * Loudoun this year. The project will be expanded! yearly.
A guide for teachers, “Thei Unfiltered Facts About Smoking,” compiled by the TB Association, from the best of forty in the nation, is being distributed by the Association to the libraries of schools having a fifth grade and up. A kit of sample materials and list of films available from all four of the groups is also being supplied in the eight-county area of the northernmost part of Virginia.
The approach to the students is one of factual information on consequences for making a personal decision. Individual and classroom assignments of collecting and analyzing the facts are stressed rather than the teacher supplying the information.
