Back in the thirties, social security started with retirement insurance only, but it didn’t take the architects of the program long to see that the concept of retirement insurance was by no means sufficient. In 1939, amendments to the law added benefits for the dependents ol retired workers as \^gll as survivors benefits in case of the Worker’s death. In the fifties a new type of insurance wai added...designed for the workei who had to stop work because ol a disability. Now it is possible foi the disabled widow, disabled | widower, disabled divorced wife of a worker who was insured under Sofia) security at death to receive disability benefits as early as age 50.
Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, District Manager of the Winchester Social Security Administration announced today that these new benefits are possible as a result of a change to the law.
^Under the present law, a widow who is unable to work because of severe disability may be able to get monthly benefits as early as age 50. Disabled widow’s benefits are also payable to a surviving divorced wife at age 50, but only (1) if her marriage to the wage earner lasted as long as 20 years, and (2) he yyps contributing to her support at "the time of his death (or was under court order to do so). A disabled widower who was receiving at least half of his support from his wife at the time she died is also eligible for benefits at age 50.
In order to meet the disability requirement for these new benefits, the disabled -siirvivor must have a physical or mental impairment that (1) is severe enough to prevent the performance of any gainful work, (2) has lasted (or is expected to last) 12 months or more, and (3) started before or within 7 years after the death of the wage earner.
An exception to this rule, Mrs. Daly stated, is a widow who received monthly benefits as a widow with ''children. She can qualify if her disability starts
