Turning to other domestic problems, Sen. Byrd said he had written to Secretary of Defense j Melvin Laird to express his 1 concern over what appears to be a polr.y of inaction in the face of a growing shortage of national cemetery facilities for war veterans.
He said existing government land could be used at little or no cost to expand the system.
Sen. Byrd said: \ “Of the 98 existing national I cemeteries, 35 are now on the i inactive list and it is estimated (eight others would be closed by 1 June 30, 1970."
Six of those eight would be in Virginia, including Brandy Station in Culpeper. That would |leave only City Point Cemetery at Hopewell and Arlington in Virginia with available grave sites.
The senator drew special attention to the need for expanding Arlington Cemetery which, he said, had special significance for the nation’s l veterans.
