222 Million Phones
Now In World Use
Rapid growth continues to characterize the world telephone network as some 14 million phones were added to the global, system in 1967. This brings the world’s phones to some 222 million as of January 1, 1968. These figures were released by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company after a year of gathering and compiling the required data for the World’s Telephone Report.
In the past ten years, more than 100 million telephones have been added to the total. The ever-increasing number of telephones is indicative of the increased, usage of the telephone (for local, long distance and international calling).
During 1967, growth in international calling resulted in 12.3 million phone calls between the United States mainland and points overseas-up 2.3 million calls over the previous year. The rapid increase in the number of the international calls has accompanied the equally rapid development of complex electronic equipment, including high-capacity cables and expanded satellite communications systems. Today, more than 400 satellite circuits and thousands of underseas circuits are being used to provide telephone service between the United States and points overseas.
