I .

A friend, on learning that I had some Indian ancestry, asked what tribe my ancestors belonged. Not knowing the answer to that quiry I replied facetiously : “The Black Foot, my feet get dirtier than anyones.”

The facts here stated is all I know. In the early 1850’s my grandfather and a Mr. Sessoms went west on a trapping expedition. I don’t know how successful they were in their trapping, but Mr. Sessoms won the daughter of a tribal chieftan. Her mother was a white yvoman captured in a raid. It seems that this was a common occurance among the Indians, it eventaully caused better relationship between the tribes. Grandmothei and grandchild relationship? 1 know" nothing about Little Deer’s mother but that she was a Christian woman and must have been small, my grandmother was so petite. n It is not known what happened to Mr. Sessoms, whether he died in the Civil War, my grandfathei was seriously wounded. After h< recovered he married Mrs Sessoms and adopted her twc sohs. Of this union four mors sons and one daughter blessed ths home, my father being the eldest I never knew my grandfather Neither of them for that matter

My grandmother^ came from beyond the Big Water (Mississippi River) and while I’ve heard her mention the Omaha, the Osage and Piute tribe of Indians I never learned to which tribe she belonged. She was skilled in collecting wild herbs for home remedies. It seemed I was her favorite of my father’s brood, she let me help her most often.

The thing I remember most about Little Deer, her christened name was Patricia, was her devotion to God. I’ve heard her whisper: “Oh, I love you so, praise your Holy Name.” Or, “Praise Him, praise Him, He is so good to me.” I wonder if there was any conflict in her soul between her adopted God and the Great Spirit of her ancestors.

So in conclusion, I know very

{little about my Noble Red Man ancestry. I do not consjder it a stigma, rather l am proud of my small heritage as an original owner of this great country. Some contend that the American Indian was one of the lost tribes of Israel. Archeologists refute that in maintaining that the Red Man has been here for 20,000 years. Maybe we came from Atlantis, which according to legend, sank about that

Miss Becky Edmonds of Front Royal was a Sunday caller of Mrs. J. M. Lillard our brother. Afte all, that is what will really count in the HOME and the SOUL.
