The rate would result in a net of $519 million, which would eliminate the postal deficit for the first time since World War EL

In our ever changing world of automation and space the worker becomes increasingly involved in the duties of his job and the complexities of life. As a result, i he might not be aware of the : important features of the ■ disability program under social ? security. i Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, District f Manager of the Winchester, Va. ■ Social Security Office stated r because of this unawareness, many disabled workers and their 1 families are not applying for ■ benefits for which they could be > entitled. To qualify for these ' benefits, she explained, a worker l must meet the following requirements: (1) Have at least 5 years of work during a 10-year period ending when the worker became disabled. It is not necessary that the 5 years of work be continuous or even in units of full years. Social security 1 credits are counted in units of ■ calendar quarters of the year, and ! the work requirements can be I met if a worker has at least 20 • quarters of work under the law I during the 40 quarters ending i when he became disabled. (2) i Have a mental or physical i condition which prevents him from doing any substantial . gainful work. The condition must be expected to last (or has lasted) ’ for at least 12 months or is • expected to result in death. Other ! factors considered in making a ' disability determination are the individual’s age, education, ’ training and work experience. If a person cannot do his regular work but can do other substantial 1 gainful work, he should not be considered disabled. If a worker 1 becomes temporarily disabled and 1 is expected to be disabled for 12 full months or more, he should apply for benefits for himself and his dependents.
