Jerry D. Claiborne, head football coach at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg will serve as State Crusade Chairman for the American Cancer Society’s annual educational and, fund-raising Crusade in Virginia.'

As Crusade Chairman, Coach Claiborne will lead 65,000 volunteers from throughout the state in their efforts to raise $1,040,000 during the April Cancer Crusade. In 1968, the Society’s Virginia Division went over the million dollar mark foi the first time with Crusade receipts totaling $1,018,470 and became one of the Society’s top 15 Divisions in the country.

During his eight years at VPI, Coach Claiborne has guided the Virginia Tech Gobblers to 52 wins and 27 losses. This year, which was to be his biggest rebuilding year since 1962, his team not only had a winning season, but also made its second liberty Bowl appearance in the last three years.

Among the outstanding athletes he has coached have been three All-American players - Bob Schweickert in 1964, Frank Loria last year, and Mike Widger this year.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Coach Claiborne began his coaching career in 1950 at Augusta Military Academy, Staunton. He entered the college ranks under Paul (Bear) Bryant at Kentucky, went on to Texas A&M, Missouri, and Alabama before coming to Tech in 1961. Hie forty-year old coach is a national leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a service organization which has assisted the Society with cancer education programs in Montgomery County public schools. His first appearance as State Crusade Chairman will be in Richmond, January 24, as luncheon speaker at the Crusade Leaders’ Conference for Crusade volunteers from throughout the state. Theme for the meeting will be “The Winners.”
