Federal Matching Funds For State Safety Projects
Dinwiddie County will receive $5,350, Manassas $7,600, Franklin County $2,718.30 and Boones Mill $1,508.51 for emergency medical services. These funds will go towards the purchase of equipment such as ambulances and two-way radios, and for surveys.
The city of Richmond will receive $18,728.50 for processing accident records. A good portion of this grant will be used to procure electronics equipment, as processing is now done manually, wasting man hours and delaying information.
Fairfax City will receive $9,250 for the establishment of a traffic-law violator’s school. Virginia law permits a judge to send offenders to such schools in place of, or in addition to, other penalties.
Bristol will be awarded $565, the city of Rdanoke $22,739 and Hampton $7,156.75 to expand their driver education programs to include out of school youths and adults.
Franklin County will get an additional $696.09 to be used in the purchase of audiovisual equipment for driver education classes and Alleghany County $350 for psycho-physical testing devices.
Under the U. S. Highway Safety Act of 1966, states and their political subdivisions are eligible to receive federal funds on a 50-50 matching basis for acceptable projects in the Held of highway safety. Local projects in Virginia are submitted to the Governor through the Highway Safety Division for approval and forwarded to the National Highway Safety Bureau.
The State and various localities have previously been awarded $474,132.39 during the current fiscal year. In order to receive these Federal funds, local funds must be expended and vouchers submitted to the Department of Transportation, through the Highway Safety Division, requesting reimbursement of fifty percent of the total spent. The refund requested is then returned to the locality.
