Ross Retires from
Highway Dept.
Thomas W. Ross, a Virginia Department of Highways employe for 46 years and its Culpeper district right-of-way engineer since 1956, will retire June 30. The Department, announcing Ross’ retirement today, said that he will be succeeded by Henry M. Snead, Jr., his assistant for the past six years.
Ross, 7 0, joined the Department as a rod man on a survey party in April, 1923, and held varied assignments before his promotion to direct the right-of-way program in the 13-county Culpeper district.
He is a past president of the Gordonsville Chamber of Commerce and the Gordonsville Lions Club, and is past master and past district deputy grand master in his Masonic organization.
His successor, Snead, 53, joined the Department in April, 1950, and has spent his career in the Culpeper district. He became district right-of-way appraiser in May, 1961, and was advanced to assistant district right-of-way engineer in February, 1963.
Snead has a bachelor of science degree from Hampden-Sydney College, reached the rank of lieutenant commander in the navy during Worl<$ War II, and has been president of Culpeper County’s combined Parent-Teacher Association.
He is married to the former Jeanne M. Copley, and they have a son and a daughter.
