Richmond - In a plea for sensible driving during the three-day Fourth of July holiday, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, called attention to the errors that contributed to 21 deaths during the same holiday period last year.
There were 18 crashes which killed one or more people each, he said. These produced eight drivers known to have been drinking and nine speed violations. Also involved were two drivers who tried to handle disturbances in moving vehicles from behind the wheel, one operating without lights and one with a known and severe physical defect. Three pedestrians died with no faults charged against the drivers. Mr. Hanna noted that none of the 12 occupants of automobiles to whom seatbelts were known to be available had them fastened.
“Any of us who takes to the roads can meet a violator and suffer injury or death through no fault of our own,” he observed. “Driving should be adjusted to compensate for the mistakes of others and for adverse conditions, such as heavy traffic, bad weather and darkness. Foresight, tolerance and alertness can go a long way towards preventing us from becoming holiday traffic statistics.”
