1968 An Ugly Year

For Americans

1968 was an ugly year for Americans. Tragedy of spectacular magnitude became a frequent front page occurrence. But a quieter national calamity took its dreadful toll on all the days before, during and after the Tet offensive in Vietnam, the riots, the assassinations.

Officer Reports Two

Traffic Crashes

Trooper W. A. Buntin reported two traffic crashes which he investigated with property damage but no injuries. The first occurred on Friday and the second on Saturday.

A 1969 Volvo operated by Jeffrey Lee Franklin of Adelphi, Md. and a 60 Mercury operated by Della Price Snider of Blacksburg collided at Ben Venue Friday about 11 p.m. The Franklin vehicle ran across the center line at the detour at Ben Venue on Route 211 and struck the side of the Snider car.

Damage was estimated at $300 to Franklin and $400 to Snider. Franklin was charged with failing to drive to the right of the road.

At 1:15 a.m. Saturday a hall mile north of Flint Hill on Route 522 Walter Randolph Sheads of Rixeyville crashed into an unoccupied vehicle which had apparently drifted into the highway. Sheads was operating a 65 Chevrolet and struck a 1964 Chevrolet owned by C. W. Dodson of Flint Hill. According to Trooper Buntin, Dodson had parked his vehicle on the side of the road for it was not running properly. The car drifted across the road and was struck by Sheads. About $700 in damage was done to each auto.
