High Level in ’68
Retail business in Rappahannock County was at a high level in the past year, with most stores showing gains over 1967.
Bolstered by bigger incomes, local residents bought a record amount of goods and services. They spent liberally for food, clothing, cars, furniture and a wide variety of other consumer products.
Just how well local merchants fared in the year is revealed in a survey made by the Standard Rate and Data Service. The report, just released, shows how people in each section of the country spent their retail dollars during the year.
In Rappahannock County, a large part of it was for food Approximately 30 cents out ol each dollar spent in local retail stores went to groceries, bakeries, delicatessens, fish markets, butcher shops and other food outlets.
By comparison, only 22 cents was so-spent in the rest of the United States and 23 cents in the State of Virginia.
The overall sales volume in the year, in stores selling food for home consumption, reached $898,000,. an ifl?re*uje previous year’s $862,000. ■
