Take Camp Honors
Sperryville Boy Scout Troop No. 65 captured most of the honors in a week of camping and competition last week at Camp Rock Enon near Gore, Va. The summer camping season for the Shenandoah Council Boy Scouts of America opened at Camp Rock Enon on June 23. There were eight troops in attendance with 85 boys and 12 leaders. Rappahannock County is included in the Shenandoah Council.
A banner award, Enon Elite, was presented Troop No. 65 for its outstanding accomplishments during the week. The Sperryville Troop composed of eight Scouts also took the championship in the Water Events competition. They were honored with a watermelon feast.
Individual awards wale: Bill Kilby who received merit badges in forestry, leather work, basketry and Scout lifeguard; Bill Stokes, had badges in nature, life saving, camping and cooking; Bobby Titchenell made life saving, cooking, basketry, reptile study and insect life badges; Frank Coffey became a First Class Scout and earned badges in first aid and basketry; Allen Smoot, Tommy Woodard, Clyde Moore and Charles Grigsby made second class Scout and received badges in leather work and earned the Outpost patch.
Bill Kilby, Bill Stokes and Bobby Titchenell were tapped for the Order of the Arrow, one of the highest honors in scouting. The Rev. William A. Harrison is Scoutmaster; however, the boys were accompanied to camp by the Rev. B. G. Titchenell who is Director of Shenandoah Area Council. The 32 man camp staff was led by Dan Beard and Carroll Shepherd, Camp Director, respectively. Scouting techniques and skills learned at Rock Enon are used by troops at home throughout the year.
