first compilec in Virginia in 1782 though a number between that year and 1787 are missing. It is interesting to note that the Culpeper books of 1783 contains the names of a majority of the families living in Rappahannock County in 1833.
The 1833 assessment list of Rappahannock was compiled by David Brown and not of 1834 by William Menefee, Commissioner of Revenue. The roster of Rappahannock was typical of the other Piedmont counties as to the national origins of the people. There were 1880 negroes, 1858 slaves and 22 “free men of color.” “Freetown”, on Fodderstack Road near Flint Hill was a settlement of these free men.
