There were a number of Seoteh-Irish from the counties west of the Blue Ridge, Germans from the valley and from the Germanna Ford settlement, a few. Welsh and French — the latter coming from the Huguenot colony of Manakin, on the James River near Richmond. The Amiss family, for whom Amissville was named, was such a French family that settled in Manakin in 1700.
