Upon the creation of the county, Governor Floyd appointed a Commission of the Peace, its governing body. The Commission consisted of twenty four members. Elijah Amiss, John D. Browning, John R. Thornton, Addison Turner, John Turner, Thomas Walden and William Walden. The Commission held its first meeting at the home of Ann Coxe in Washington, April 1, 1833. It named William A.
