Besides the allotments to the individual counties, the secondary system budget includes $800,000 to be divided equally among the state’s eight highway districts for upgrading and replacing inadequate bridges on secondary routes; $5,949 for erosion control involving soil conservation district projects, and $87,379 in state funds to match federal funds for planning.
An additional $750,000 is included in the secondary system budget to develop access roads to recreational areas.
Under other distribution methods, the State Highway Commission later this spring will allocate funds for use on the interstate, arterial regular primary and urban road systems during the next fiscal year. a
The total secondary system allocation for Rappahannock County is $317,666.
TB Can Be Curtailed
“There were 42,000 new cases of tuberculosis last year, but there are tests to spot it, pills to prevent it, pills to treat it, and TB can be knocked out,” said Lawson Cowart, new president of the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Northern Virginia. “A tuberculin skin test tells if TB germs are in the body,” he continued. “A chest X-ray tells if the germs have done damage, and sputum tests tell if they are causing active disease.” “If a person becomes infected, isoniazid pills can make sure he doesn’t develop active disease nor transfer the disease to some one else. Isoniazid is also one of several excellent drugs used to treat and knock out active TB.’ Posters and leaflets with this message have just been mailed to industries in the area served by the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Northern Virginia.
