“Don’t let Death take your holiday-or cause it to take anyone else’s,” said John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, today as, what he twined, the most dangerous days of the year approached.
Hanna said studies show that three out of four fatal crashes at Christmastime involve speed too fast for conditions or above the posted limits. He added that while alcohol, on the average, figures in at least half of all fatal crashes, the percentage rises sharply during the Christmas-New Year period.
He quoted the National Safety Council in saying that during five major holiday periods last year, the mileage death rate ran 12 percent higher than normal. The four-day Christmas holiday saw 755 traffic deaths nationally, 15 of which occurred in Virginia. Virginia contributed 15 more to the Nation’s 600 during the New Year holiday.
