A Rare Treat

Blacksburg - Do you remember when oranges were so rare that they were inserted as a special treat in the toe of your Christmas stocking? How times have changed. This wonderful berry is now one of the most important fruits in the worldDoes it shake you a bit for me to call it a berry? This is its correct botanical classification, believe it or not. A berry, to set the record straight, is a fruit which is soft all the way through. Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit and lemons are a special type of berry with a leathery rind, but they are still berries.
And to pursue this a bit farther, many of the fruits we eat are berries. These include bananas, blueberries, cranberries, dates, grapes, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, muskmelons and watermelons.
But, back to oranges. This fine fruit originated in southeast Asia, several thousand years ago. The earliest known written record is a Chinese treatise dated 1174.
Columbus brought oranges to Haiti on his second voyage in 1493. The first plantings in Florida were made in 1565 in the St. Augustine area. Production has expanded rapidly and this year the crop, in Florida will exceed 175 million boxes.
Orange fruits are present on the tree for 12 to 16 months. Thus, the flowers for the next crop appear before the current crop is harvested. Most other fruit trees bloom in the spring and ripen the crop a few months later in the summer or fall
