Tarr estimates that his program will result in the destruction of nore than 6,800,000 pounds of :ecords and will cause the emptying of more than 170,000 four-drawer file cabinets. He said the destroyed records would stretch more than three and sne-half times around the world and would comprise a paper strip seventy-five yards wide stretching from New York to Los Angeles. Tarr added that special provisions have been made for the disposition' of certain personal and historical documents in the files including original birth or marriage certificates; Armed Forces of the United States Report of Transfer or Discharge; notification of entry into active military- service; original discharge certificates; etc. Tarr said the records destruction program in the more than 4,000 local draft boards and 56 state headquarters is almost 30% completed, with the total program scheduled for completion within three months. The records are being destroyed oy burning, maceration, ihredding or dissolution in acid, rheir confidentiality is being maintained until they are destroyed, Tarr said. In one state, le added, a railroad box car was oaded with records and burned jy the local fire department, with selective Service officials as observers. The records of Rappahannock bounty Local Board 102 were jurned on 2 September 1970. since that time, files are sent to Richmond as persons reach age 15 and are classified 5-A.
