tractors are driven too close to ditches, holes or embankments. Backward flips occur when tractor-implement hitches are set at a point higher than the center of the rear axle, or when tlje load exceeds the tractor’s power to move it. At such times the tractor employs its own power to create the rearing and backward flipping motion.
Smith disclosed an unusual reason for some tractor accidents. “It is difficult for dealers to sell safety promotion attachments for tractors. That is because the tractor buyer, before he accepts the offer, dislikes identifying himself as the victim of a potential accident and as the cause of it. This, he is reluctant to do.”
There are attachments like roll bars which serve to lower the accident toll.
A roll-over bar, sometimes called a protective frame, can be designed to serve as a crush-resistant cab to provide operator comfort. But its primary purpose is to protect the operator from serious injury in the event the tractor tips.
“Many a capsized tractor was prevented from tipping more than 90 degrees because a roll bar was there to stop it. And many a tractor operator was spared seripus injury because he was strapped into the tractor seat when a roll bar bore the weight and bulk of a tractor that reared and fell over backwards.”
Safety specialists estimate the yearly toll of 600 lives lost to overturns can be reduced by some 450 through the use of rol) bars.
