The money in these trust funds can be used only to pay benefits and the cost of administering the social security program,” she said. The largest share goes to the Old-Age and Survivolfc Insurance Trust Fund. Of each $1 in social security contributions, this fund receives 76 cents. In 1969, payments of over $24 billion were made from this fund to retired men and women, to widows and widowers, to widowed mothers, and to dependent children. About 12V4 cents out of each $1 in contributions goes to the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund to finance the hospital and other health expenses of the people who are now 65 and those who will join their ranks in the future. “The Disability Insurance Trust Fund get 11 lh cents from each $1 in social security contributions. Last year, this program paid out $2.5 billion to disabled workers and their families. This protection is vitally important to young workers,” Mrs. Crumpton emphasized. “To most young people,” she said, “social security is something to count on in your retirement years. No one expects to become disabled - to have his earnings cut off in mid-career or even before he is well started. But an accident or a disabling illness can happen to anyone.”
Almost a million and a half workers under 65 are collecting monthly social security benefits because of severe disability, she pointed out, along with over a million dependents.
If a young worker should become disabled or die, he noted, benefits to his family could amount to $50,000 or more over the years.
