A group of citizens met Friday night at Washington to discuss the high voltage transmission power line proposed by Potomac Edison Company which would go through Rappahannock County. Sixty odd people attended to hear the pros and cons of such a line.
Philip Irwin of Flint Hill chaired the meeting and was subsequently named as chairman of a committee to further the study on a workable alternative and the legal aspects of a defense to the line. Mr. Irwin had done some background research on such a project and stated that underground installation costs were rather prohibitive and could only run underground for 25 miles. Maintenance for these lines was alalso much more costly. Other types of transmissions are in the laboratory and testing stages, but that would not solve any problem today.
Rights of way were discussed and Mr. Irwin informed the group that for a 135 KV line, the right of way is 125 feet wide and for a 500 KV line, 200 feet width is required, or a total of 24 acres to a mile. The use this land may be put to after a line is run through is for growing Christmas trees or orchards, pasture or crops. It was stated that 84 land owners in Rappahannock will be directly affected by the line, many of whom were apparently not at the meeting. A committee composed of Mr. Irwin, George H. Tree Lighted ___
The Christmas tree for the Town of Washington was officially lighted last Tuesday evening. The beautifully illuminated large evergreen is located on the lot between the fire house and Rappahannock National Bank.
The tree was trimmed in celebration of the Holy Season and for the pleasure of all who pass. It is indeed regrettable that someone finds pleasure in taking bulbs from the tree and smashing them on the sidewalk. Please, let us reconsider and conduct ourselves in a proper manner.
