Substantial reductions in traffic accidents and their severity occurred in the first year after small grooves were cut experimentally in the pavement of a half-mile curved segment of Interstate 95 in Prince William County, the Virginia Department of Highways said today in a preliminary report. , The Prince William site, on the northbound lanes south of Virginia Route 123, is one of four curves selected by the Department for study of the grooving technique.
The concept originally was developed to prevent hydroplaning on airport runways, by improving traction and thus reducing skids on wet surfaces. Virginia is among the first states to experiment with such grooving for highways.
