Deer Trapped for
York River Park
A total of 55 deer were successfully captured on the Naval Weapons Station Reservation near Williamsburg and transported to York River State Park in James City County which is open to public hunting, to save an isolated portion of the base herd from starvation and disease, reports Game Commission Executive Director, Chester F. Phelps. Faced with the prospect of shooting approximately 100 deer or trying the more costly alternative of capturing and moving them to other areas, the Commission chose help base personnel attempt the latter. A “Cqchur” dart gun was used in the operation to knock out the animals long enough that they could be crated and loaded on trucks.
